We want to see you at Iowa CPA Day at the Capitol

January 09, 2026

Iowa CPA Day at the Capitol is Jan. 21

Advocacy for CPAs and the accounting profession is a cornerstone of our association. You are invited to the Iowa CPA Day at the Capitol on Jan. 21 to make sure our state’s policymakers understand issues affecting the profession.

A key focus will be on communicating the vital role CPAs hold in protecting the public and the economy. With an increase in deregulation legislation proposed in other states, we are taking a proactive approach by conveying the negative impact such changes could have for Iowans. Weakening or eliminating CPA licensure regulations would have a direct impact on mobility and reciprocity for Iowa CPAs, increase talent pipeline challenges and much more.

Become more engaged with the Society and learn about state legislative activities impacting the profession. New for 2026, a recorded prep session is available to ensure every participant is well-prepared and informed ahead of the event date.

I really enjoyed attending the Iowa CPA Day at the Capitol last year. It was my first visit, and I really appreciated being able to listen to leaders from the Society share with key legislators the issues impacting our profession. Between observing those initial conversations, pairing up with another Society member, and reviewing talking points provided by the Society, I felt prepared to meet with legislators from my own district,” said Laura Meier, ISCPA vice chair.

Iowa CPA Day at the Capitol aims to increase our outreach efforts and reduce anxiety about talking to legislators thanks to provided talking points as well as group meetings with elected representatives. We want to use this opportunity to help them understand that different professions carry different levels of public risk. CPAs are a vital cog in the economic wheel, using their expertise to catch financial errors before they affect businesses, taxpayers, and lenders. Building relationships with legislators is one way you can help us advocate for the profession.

Free for all members, the event begins at the Hoover Office Building where we welcome attendees, have a light lunch, and review ISCPA’s legislative agenda with Brad Epperly, ISCPA’s legislative counsel. We will provide talking points to help spark conversation with lawmakers and reduce the anxiety about how to approach questions on issues. The Iowa Department of Revenue directors will also address the group and answer questions before we walk to the Capitol through a tunnel.

All are encouraged to arrange short one-on-one meetings with their district representatives to introduce yourself and establish crucial connections. When advocating for a need or legislation, relationships are vital.

Whether you’re a seasoned professional or just starting your career, this opportunity is designed for all regardless of company, position or years in the business. Every year, legislation is introduced that has the potential to impact you, your clients and the profession.

ISCPA member Zach Vande Weerd shared his experience and advice, “Being a first-time attendee at the 2025 Iowa CPA Day at the Capitol, I was a little hesitant about where to go, what was expected of me, who I'd be talking to, or what I'd even really be doing. However, ISCPA was great about setting and communicating expectations to attendees; from where to park, security clearances we'd go through, presenter names and topics, etc. Almost everything was in a group format, but you also had the ability to reach out to your specific representatives.”

Zach added, “I'd highly recommend attending to anyone just looking to better understand the role of the Society in the legislative process and what the key initiatives are so you're aware. You, as a member, may be able to help. My biggest piece of advice would be just introducing yourself to everyone you meet and asking questions when you don't understand something.”

The more members involved, the larger our impact on lawmakers. The Iowa General Assembly meets January to mid-April. While we are entering a busy time of year for many CPAs, this is the best time to express to elected representatives how the work of CPAs impacts the public, economic and business environment in Iowa.
