Objectives
Serving as a board member is an incredible opportunity to lead within the nonprofit sector and put your passion for a charitable cause into practice. Along with an affinity for the mission, effective board members must possess a clear understanding of roles and responsibilities to keep the organization on track.
This interactive session will introduce the roles of nonprofits and their boards and empower you to map out a meaningful plan for board service. Through video, storytelling and hands-on virtual exercises, explore the dimensions of commitment and alignment of board service. Develop a clear understanding of your role and contributions in the boardroom, and learn how to effectively apply your skills to advance the mission of the organization you care most about.

Ellie Burns, Sr Director of Nonprofit Relations, Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines
Ellie is the Senior Director of Nonprofit Relations at the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines. In this role, she serves as a knowledge broker for nonprofit and community partners, connecting organizations with valuable resources and services within the Community Foundation as well as other community resources. Ellie oversees the design and delivery of all nonprofit sector programming and support trainings, convenings, and peer learning experiences. She is the entry point for nonprofit engagement with the Community Foundation and works to support the overall health and wellbeing of the nonprofit sector in Greater Des Moines.
Prior to joining the Community Foundation in September 2021, Ellie oversaw the federal TRIO grants at Central College. In addition to her experience in grant management, she brings experience both leading and participating in various Boards. She served as the President of the Iowa TRIO Board of Directors for two years as well as the Secretary for the Educational Opportunity Association Board of Directors for one. She has a doctoral degree from Drake University in Educational Leadership.
Ellie grew up in northeast Nebraska. Her and her husband Scott have one daughter, Sophia, who will be a freshman at TCU in the fall. In her free time, she enjoys running on one of Des Moines beautiful trails.
