CPA Exam score releases are changing in 2027: What Iowa CPAs need to know

October 23, 2026

The path to becoming a CPA requires commitment, planning and persistence. Beginning in July 2027, aspiring CPAs will need to pay particular attention to one more factor: when they can sit for the exam and when they can expect their scores.

The American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) has announced a transition to a new technology platform for delivering the CPA Exam. While the change is designed to modernize the testing experience, it will temporarily interrupt testing and significantly adjust score-release timing for 12 months following the launch.

For Iowa CPAs who supervise candidates, recruit accounting graduates or support the next generation of the profession, understanding these changes now can help prevent unnecessary surprises later.

What is changing?

Through the first half of 2027, the published Core exam testing and score-release schedule remains consistent with the established cycle. Candidates can continue planning around the scheduled testing deadlines and target score-release dates.

The transition begins July 1, 2027, when CPA Exam testing will pause for 11 days. Testing resumes July 12 on the new platform.

Following the transition, score releases will be less frequent, with longer waits between testing and results.

For Core exam candidates, the first post-transition testing window runs July 12 through September 30, 2027, with a target score-release date of October 19. Subsequent target releases are December 28, 2027; March 28, 2028; and June 27, 2028.

Discipline candidates will also experience adjusted testing windows and longer waits for results. For example, the July 2027 Discipline testing window runs July 12 through August 12, with a target score-release date of September 28.

These are target dates, not guarantees, and candidates should consult the AICPA’s official schedule for updates.

Why does this matter to Iowa employers?

Longer waits for exam results may affect how candidates coordinate testing with graduation, employment start dates and other professional milestones. They may also influence how firms structure exam-support programs, communicate expectations and plan staffing around candidates’ progress.

Employers should avoid assuming candidates will receive results on the familiar schedule. Instead, firms can help by discussing testing plans early, allowing flexibility where possible and ensuring candidates understand the transition before scheduling exams.

Just as importantly, leaders should communicate that this is a change in exam delivery and score timing—not an announced change to the exam’s passing standard.

What should members do now?

First, share the information.
Make sure staff who supervise candidates, campus recruiters and accounting faculty understand the transition.

Second, encourage early planning.
Candidates expecting to test in summer or fall 2027 should review the blackout period and revised score-release calendar before committing to dates.

Third, keep the profession’s pipeline in focus.
Becoming a CPA already requires substantial effort. Clear information, supportive employers and realistic expectations can help candidates navigate the process with confidence.

ISCPA will continue to share relevant updates and resources to help Iowa CPAs support future professionals.
