The generosity of Iowans supports more than 12,000 nonprofits, but the nonprofit sector is experiencing increasing competition for resources and funding. In response, several nonprofits are considering the possibility of mergers, particularly when missions are strongly aligned.
In 2020, Youth Emergency Services and Shelter (YESS) and Youth Homes of Mid-America (Youth Homes) recognized that there might be opportunities for greater partnership and started to explore the possibility of a merger. The results were clear: both organizations were truly stronger together. The resulting organization, Ellipsis, offers a broader continuum of care for kids and families in Central Iowa.
In this examination of a nonprofit merger, we’ll share why nonprofit mergers are gaining in popularity, and how nonprofit mergers are unique compared to their for-profit equivalents. We’ll deep dive into the merger exploration process that led to creation of Ellipsis, as well as hear from CEO Chris Koepplin as she shares the lessons she learned along the way. Finally, we’ll share how this merger will directly impact the lives of children and their families in Iowa.
