EQ (or emotional intelligence) is defined as the ability to understand, manage and effectively express your own feelings and navigate through the spoken and unspoken responses of those around you. Having a high EQ will overcome intelligence and even a lack of education. While IQ and personality remain fairly stable, EQ can be improved through education, understanding, behavioral adjustment and practice.

Liz will walk attendees through the EQ fundamentals, including:

  • The five competencies in the Emotional Competency Framework.
  • How to quickly identify the EQ of those around you and determine a course of action. 
  • How to communicate the connection between EQ and performance.

Courtney De Ronde, CPA is an assurance principal at TDT CPAs and Advisors, PC. in West Des Moines. She has 15 years of experience in public accounting and works in the nonprofit sector providing audit, accounting and consulting services to a variety of nonprofit organizations. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in accounting from the University of Northern Iowa. Courtney leads the firm’s assurance services business unit and serves on the firm’s executive committee.

Courtney shares her time and talents through service to many nonprofit and civic organizations. She currently serves on the Pella Christian Grade School Donations Committee and has served on the board of directors of the Oskaloosa Area Chamber and Development Group and a local nonprofit preschool. Courtney is a member of the Iowa Society of Certified Public Accountants and the American Institute of CPAs. She is recognized among others within the profession for her expertise as she presents at various conferences and seminars.

Her firm, Gale Mote Associates, specializes in high performance work cultures, team development, emotional intelligence, front-line manager training and organizational development consulting. Prior to starting her own company in 1990, Gale worked for various manufacturing enterprises including Del Monte, Square D Corporation, Quaker Oats, and Norand Corporation.

Alan Feirer is a leadership trainer, Everything DiSC® Authorized Partner, Five Behaviors of a Cohesive Team™ Authorized Partner, organizational development consultant, and author of The Group Dynamic Field Guide: 51 Ideas Leaders Can Use Today, and the Group Dynamic Field Guide for Youth, with foreword by Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser. Alan helps people embrace challenging work and have less stress while getting more done since 1998 through his work with Group Dynamic. He works with managers, directors, leadership teams, staffs, and team members through leadership training, team-building, and communication training

Alan lives in Winterset. He holds membership in many professional organizations, including Optimists, Madison County Area Chamber of Commerce, the West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Des Moines Partnership, and the Association for Talent Development where he served as a Central Iowa chapter President.

Debi Durham

Debi V. Durham was named director of the Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA, formerly Iowa Department of Economic Development) in January 2011 by Iowa Governor Terry Branstad. Prior to joining IEDA, Durham served as president of the Siouxland Chamber of Commerce. In 2016, Director Durham was recognized by the Des Moines Business Record as a Women of Influence, and in 2014, she was named a Janus Fellow by the Janus Institute, an organization with the mission of contributing to the body of knowledge in economic development and advancing its practice. In 2009, the Downtown Rotary Club in Sioux City recognized Durham as their Key Way award winner, designating a local leader who has “contributed greatly to the health and prosperity of the area through business and community involvement.” Durham was also recognized by the Iowa Association of Business and Industry as one of “Five Iowa Women You Should Know” in 2007. In 2003, she was named to the Junior Achievement Hall of Fame and was the Republican Lt. Gubernatorial candidate in 2002. Durham holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, Marketing and Management from Missouri Southern State University. [2017]

Elizabeth P. Nead

A speaker, coach and television host, Liz Nead is an expert in bringing life back to everyday life. Jason Kiesau is the leadership and talent development manager with Aureon HR in West Des Moines. He has studied personal, professional and leadership development for over 16 years. His roles as a business coach, business owner, diversity trainer and leadership and talent development manager has given him unique experiences and understanding of people and business. Today he travels across the United States working with leaders and managers; helping them enhance their emotional, social and leadership intelligence.

Eileen Wixted

As the principal of Wixted & Company—and a founding partner of Wixted Pope Nora Thompson & Associates (WPNT)—Eileen is a nationally recognized expert in strategic communication and crisis management. She actively helps clients effectively manage potentially brand-damaging issues and prepares them to face media interviews, shareholder meetings, presentations and government investigations.

With more than two decades of experience, Eileen has a keen understanding of issues affecting the nuclear, health care, energy and manufacturing industries. In fact, over 50 percent of commercially owned and operated nuclear power plants in North America and several hundred of the nation’s hospitals depend on Eileen for expert counsel, media support, training and drills.

Eileen is a native of Brooklyn, New York. After graduating from Michigan State University with a mass communications degree, she spent a decade as a broadcast journalist and anchor, during which time she received an Emmy Award and her health segments were nationally syndicated. Eileen authored Media Guide to Radiological Issues and was named the 2016 Women Business Owner of the Year. She also served as interim senior vice president of communications and government affairs for Advocate Health Care, Illinois’ largest health care system; and was guest speaker for the Executive Education Programs at Center for Homeland Defense and Security, Naval Postgraduate School.
