Breakout Session

9:15am - 10:30am Cryptocurrency and Fraud

When fraud is being facilitated through cryptocurrencies, accountants and finance professionals need to have a basic understanding of how cryptocurrencies work. Contrary to common beliefs, cryptocurrency transactions can be traced, even though it may be difficult. Entities such as FTX have facilitated massive frauds utilizing cryptocurrencies as the primary vehicle to entice investors. In this interactive session, learn a high-level review of blockchain, how to potentially trace transactions, and how historical psychological approaches are being utilized to entice investors into providing their funds without doing the proper due diligence.

Key takeaways:

  • Identify the components of a blockchain sequence.
  • Differentiate between cryptocurrency and a token.

  • Evaluate psychological methods being used to facilitate cryptocurrency fraud schemes.

1:50pm - 2:40pm The Dark Triad of Ethicality: How Illusory Superiority, Bounded Ethicality, and Confirmation Bias Impact Ethical Decision-Making

While financial professionals often have the best intentions, certain mental processes can interfere with objectivity. Three particular maladies, referred to as illusory superiority, bounded ethically and confirmation bias, can indirectly lead to flawed conclusions and examinations — which can directly affect credibility. This session will uncover methods to ensuring a fair and impartial fraud examination can be conducted. This session qualifies for one hour of ethics CPE credit.

Key highlights:

  • Create mental triggers to improve ethical outcomes
  • Determine how perception affects decision-making
  • Evaluate methods to mitigate the negative effects of power and myopic vision
