Helping today's students explore the "real world" of accounting.
Career Possibilities in Accounting (CPA) Program

Please help the Society tell young people how wonderful it is to be a CPA in Iowa! We make this easy for you to do by providing a speaker outline and other materials. Once again, ISCPA is making an extra effort to take our very positive message about accounting careers to students, especially juniors and seniors in high school, through the CPA Program.

The CPA Program, sponsored by the Career Awareness Committee of the Iowa Society of CPAs, asks members to speak to students about their careers in accounting, what CPAs do, how to become a CPA, etc. Most important, speakers will be asked to convey the opportunities a CPA certificate provides those in public accounting and in business and industry, education, and government.

What types of speaker materials are available?
You will receive a packet of materials from the Career Awareness Committee to help you prepare for your presentation: a letter from the committee, a presentation outline, key points to make, salary information, 150-hour information, an update on the new computerized CPA exam, and other career-related materials that will help you. NOTE: if an educator contacts you directly, let the ISCPA staff know so these materials can be sent to you.

CPA iPACK: Videos, Games
Speakers may request the CPA Information Package (iPACK) to give to the teacher when a presentation is made. The iPack features a DVD with the original Takin’ Care of Business video and another video, new in 2006, titled CPA…Imagine the Possibilities. Each video can be viewed in its entirety or as individual profiles.

Three interactive games on the DVD provide a fun and engaging introduction to different CPA specialties. Printable lesson plans and activities from the Takin’ Care of Business Education Handbook are also included. The lesson plans are based on National Business Education Association (NBEA) and National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) learning standards, and integrate the AICPA Core Competencies. In addition to the DVD, the iPACK contains:

  • User’s Guide–includes a presenter’s guide that covers topics of interest to students and provides suggested discussion points.
  • Career Guides–introduces services that CPAs provide, earning potential and requirements for becoming a CPA. 25 copies are included with the iPACK.
  • Bookmarks–provides Web addresses for further information about accounting and CPAs. 25 bookmarks are included with the iPACK.
  • Poster–helps students become aware of what a CPA is and what a CPA can do.

Your help is needed!
Even though recent statistics indicate an increase in the number of students majoring in accounting, there are fewer candidates sitting for the CPA exam. So, the need to reach students about becoming a CPA is important. Now that we have the attention of students, it is a perfect opportunity to educate them about the CPA profession.

Please consider speaking to students not only in your area but also in surrounding counties and across the state. Experienced and new speakers will be needed throughout the state to help ISCPA fill speaking requests. The Career Awareness Committee would like every teacher who requests a CPA speaker to have one.

During the school year (more likely in the fall than in the spring), an ISCPA staff person may contact you to ask if you are available to speak. If you are, you will be given information so that you can contact the educator who requested a speaker. You and the educator will set a date for your presentation that works best for both of you.

Please volunteer!
