Financial Literacy

The Iowa Society of CPAs has long been committed to improving the financial skills and knowledge base of Iowans. Organizations and civic groups can request a CPA member to speak on a wide variety of financial topics, at no charge. Members also speak to students as part of the Career Possibilities in Accounting (CPA) Program. Consumers can find a wealth of financial advice in the Money Management articles.

The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and state CPA societies are partnering with the Ad Council in a nationwide effort to encourage Americans aged 25-34 to “feed the pig” as a key step toward building a solid financial future for themselves and their families.
[This is an extension of the national financial literacy effort (www.aicpa.org/financialliteracy/index.asp).]

Americans in this age group face a potentially troubling future as a consequence of their current spending and saving habits, according to a study commissioned by AICPA. The study was conducted by Dr. Christopher Thornberg and Dr. Jon Haveman, economists with Beacon Economics in Los Angeles. The complete report is available at www.aicpa.org/mediacenter.

Feed the Pig™ is a national multi-media public-service announcement campaign sponsored by the AICPA and the Ad Council. You can view the PSAs at www.adcouncil.org/default.aspx?id=373. Free financial information and tools to help 25- to 34-year-olds make positive changes in their financial lives can be found at the Web site (www.FeedthePig.org).
