State auditor reviews governor's FY 2015 budget proposal
Fulfilling her duty as the "taxpayers’ watchdog", State Auditor Mary Mosiman weighs in on Gov. Branstad’s fiscal year 2015 budget proposal. With pressure on spending and revenues in 2015 and beyond, Mosiman noted, "The state is essentially an equal partner with the federal government in terms of delivering services to Iowans. As the federal government makes its fiscal decisions, we can reasonably expect a change in federal dollars coming to the state. When that happens, we need to be prepared." Read the full release.
Revised AICPA Code Adopted
The Professional Ethics Executive Committee (PEEC) has adopted a revised AICPA Code of Professional Conduct (AICPA Code).The revised Code will be effective Dec. 15, 2014. The new conceptual frameworks and related interpretations however, will not be effective until Dec. 15, 2015. Learn more.
IRS kicks off 2014 tax season
The IRS opened the 2014 filing season by highlighting a growing array of online services and encouraging taxpayers to check out a variety of tax benefits, such as the often-overlooked Earned Income Tax Credit. Read more.
United Way seeks volunteer tax preparers
United Way of Central Iowa is looking for volunteers to provide free tax preparation for low- to moderate-income central Iowans. The agency plans to open seven sites between Jan. 21 and April 15, where volunteers can help needy Iowans fill out their taxes during the day, evening and weekend. Last year, volunteers with this program helped nearly 5,000 residents and “brought back $7.7 million to our community,” United Way said.
